A fortnight after declaring the waiving off of toll for Pune and Pimpri-Chichwad residents at Khed-Shivapur toll plaza, government officials have not acted on it. Having enforced use of FASTags for toll, officials have failed to ensure this exemption by not scanning specified vehicles at the plaza.
Now, they suggest that all eligible vehicles queue up in the cash only lane or just deactivate their FASTags accounts. “A meeting will soon be held with our seniors, the transport minister and other members of the Union ministry of road transport and highways. This was anyway supposed to be a temporary relief and a final decision will soon be out. People can meanwhile take the cash-only lane,” said Suhas Chitnis, project director, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Amit Bhatia, general manager (revenue and operations) at Reliance Infrastructure, company in charge of maintaining the road and toll plaza, said, “There is a meeting soon, where a decision on this toll naka will be taken. For now, there is no provision for people with activated FASTag to skip toll and vehicles will have to continue going through scanning. Alternately, all we can suggest is to deactivate FASTag, if people do not want money deducted from FASTag wallets.”
With none of this said earlier, commuters on the route are feeling cheated each time money goes out of their FASTag account. “I travelled through this spot on Tuesday and was confused on how to avail of exemption for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad residents.
