At least 15 passengers were injured after a banking engine smashed into the Agartala-Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express at Badarpur railway station in Assam’s Karimganj district on Thursday. The injured passengers were immediately admitted to the railway hospital.
According to eyewitness accounts, the passenger train arrived at Badarpur railway station as per schedule and was supposed to depart for the New Haflong hill section. The banking engine is attached to the train before it departs for hilly areas.
As the banking engine was being attached to the train, the loco pilot could not control its speed and the engine ended up colliding with the train. At least 15 train passengers including women and children suffered injuries and were rushed to the railway hospital.
One passenger confirmed that the banking engine smashed into the train hard as they were waiting to depart. “Many passengers had received injuries in the incident,” the passenger said.
Following the incident, Indian Railways detained the train for two hours to ensure that all passengers in need of medical attention are looked after.
