Madhya Pradesh: Discom gives Rs 2.5 crore power factor rebate to Indore consumers

Madhya Pradesh Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitran Company Limited has given a rebate of over Rs 2.50 crore to its consumers of Indore and nearby region as power factor incentives.

Discom officials said that this rebate has been given on around 1.25 lakh electricity bills issued to non-domestic consumers whose connections are equipped with smart meters. This includes electricity connections used by mostly commercial establishments as well as industries.

Power factor rebate is given as per the tariff, when the average power factor of the consumer’s installation in any month is more than 0.85 lag or point. The consumers in such cases are entitled to a rebate at the rate of Rs1 per unit on their total monthly consumption.

Discom’s managing director Amit Tomar said that the power factor is recorded through radio frequency based smart meters, on the basis of the use of certified electrical equipment and electrical fittings in the establishments such as shops, malls, showrooms in case of non-domestic connections.

Same applies for industrial units or factories when it comes to calculation of power factor incentive on industrial power connections. Use of certified electrical equipment and proper electrical fittings help in reducing power loss, and also prevent short circuits in the long run, he said.

Tomar said that thousands of consumers are given power factor rebates every month after their power connections were equipped with smart meters.
